Mortgage Arrears and Repossession during Covid-19

We are living in uncertain times and many people are worried about the future. As well as fear about our health, many of us area also worried about our jobs and our ability to pay our bills. If you have a mortgage to pay then you may already be falling behind with your payments due to circumstances out of your control. This can be terrifying and it is often hard to know where to turn for help. If you have mortgage protection insurance, it is worth checking the terms of your policy to see what is covered.

On 17 March 2020 the UK government announced that mortgage lenders will give a 3 month break to those finding it difficult to pay their mortgage (this is sometimes called a ‘mortgage holiday’). This may give you a little breathing space if you are experiencing financial difficulty.

On top of this, mortgage lenders have stated that they will not take legal action against homeowners (including buy-to-let mortgages) for 3 months from 19 March 2020.

In addition, some lenders are giving their customers extra support if their income has reduced due to the coronavirus. Examples include reducing the monthly payments and switching to lower interest rates. Although it is a scary prospect, it is a good idea to speak to your mortgage lender directly, explain your situation and find out what they can do to help you.

Fife Law Centre is funded to provide legal advice and support to people in the Fife area who are facing difficulties with their mortgages. If you are in this situation, our solicitors will be pleased to speak to you so please get in touch. This service is free. Although we are working from home at the moment, we are still open for business and available to help you. You can contact us by phone, email, Facebook or on our website.
