Lockdown Guide to your Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) Claim

Lockdown Guide to your Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) Claim
Eilis Quinn, Solicitor, has prepared a quick Q&A guide for people who are in the process of CICA claim or who may be looking for legal advice and representation in relation to a new claim.

1. I’ve been advised to seek legal advice on claiming criminal injuries compensation. Can I contact you for advice during lockdown?
Yes, you can contact us for advice on starting a claim for compensation. We understand that, if you have suffered a violent crime or have experienced abuse that this will be extremely difficult for you but please be assured that your enquiry will be treated confidentially and with sensitivity. Our solicitors are working remotely and are happy to take your calls.

2. Can I begin the application process and submit a new claim for compensation during lockdown?
Yes, our solicitors are able to begin working on your claim straightaway. We can arrange for an initial meeting to take place either over the telephone or via video link. Once we gather all the information relevant to your claim, we can submit your application. We will talk you through the process and give you time to think about things.

3. I am an existing client and my application for compensation was submitted prior to lockdown. Is my application still being processed by CICA?
Yes, we have been in touch with CICA and they have confirmed that they remain open during this time. They have also assured us that applications will continue to be processed. However, like many organisations, they are offering a reduced service and waiting times may be longer than normal. Get in touch if you have any questions or concerns.

4. I am an existing client and I have not had any update on my claim during lockdown. Can I contact your office for an update?

Yes, we would encourage any client seeking an update on their application to contact us directly. Our solicitors will do our best to help you. We always contact you as soon as we receive any correspondence from CICA so, if we haven’t been in contact with you, then it is likely that we haven’t received any update from CICA. If you have any concerns, please contact us.

5. I am an existing client and my application form included a claim for mental injuries. Are you still able to contact my GP or other health professionals for medical evidence during the lockdown?

Yes, we are still corresponding with GP Practices and other health professionals related to your claim to gather medical evidence. However, due to the additional pressure placed on health services due to Covid-19, it may take longer than normal for us to receive a response from health services. We will keep all clients up to date with their cases but please contact us if you need any assistance.

If you have any other questions or concerns not raised in this guide, please contact us. Although we are working from home at the moment, we are still open for business and available to help you. You can contact us by phone, email, Facebook or on our website.
